Our guide to dance performances happening this weekend and in the week ahead.
DANCE NOW FESTIVAL at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater (Sept. 5-8, 7 p.m.; Sept. 27, 7 p.m.). This long-running annual dance showcase and competition is a fun and easy way to sample a variety of flavors from the New York dance scene in a spirited club setting. Over four consecutive nights beginning on Wednesday, 40 local artists will take the festival’s challenge to present a “clear and complete artistic statement” in five minutes or less on the postage-stamp-size stage at Joe’s Pub. The results can be funny, sweet and/or strange. After this week’s performances, producers will select the 10 they feel best met the challenge, and those performers will then return for an encore on Sept. 27, when an overall winner will be chosen. But every night of Dance Now is a buffet worth visiting.
